Khatt and Mediamatic will host a full day of lectures, presentations and celebration of new Arabic cultural expression, at the theater van 't woord in the central public library of Amsterdam.

The day events will include:
—the one-day symposium
—the launch of 5 new Arabic typefaces
—the Typographic Matchmaking book
—this international online community, the Khatt Network for Arabic Typography
—the El-Hema Exhibition
—workshops
—the El-Hema design competition

The aim of this symposium is to discuss the positive role of design and typography in Arabic youth culture, how it can generate positive perceptions and productive collaborations that bridge the gap between Eastern and Western cultures.

10 Arab and Dutch designers collaborate on designing Arabic companions for Dutch fonts

The Typographic Matchmaking project was initiated by the Khatt Foundation (Amsterdam), in April 2005. The Khatt Foundation selected and invited five renown Dutch designers and matched each one of them with an established and upcoming Arab designer. The aim was to facilitate a collaboration bewteen the Dutch and Arab designers in order to design Arabic typefaces that match and can become part of the font family of one of the Dutch designers’ existing font families. The main thrust of the project is to address the modernisation of Arabic text faces that can provide design solutions for legible Arabic fonts that answer the contemporary design needs in the Arab world (namely for publications and new digital media applications).

The Prince's School of Traditional Arts in east London has opened its degree show and Teri Pengilley went to look around. The school's VITA programme specialises in the arts and architecture of Islam and the traditional arts of other civilisations. It promotes the idea that form, geometry and colour are not simply aesthetically pleasing but are representative of a more profound universal order.

Fazlulla, who is deep into creating the next issue of the handcrafted The Musalman daily newspaper, frowns as he deciphers the handwriting and searches for a cover story. After some consideration, he passes the page to his brother who translates it into Urdu. He in turn sends the text to the back room where writers take calligraphy quills in hand and begin.
